Tap 42 $5.00 Burger Night

Have the Monday Blues? Well head over to Tap 42 for burger night!

Although there are many other burger specials in Fort Lauderdale, Tap 42 stands out above the rest. First, Tap 42 stays true to the $5.00 advertised special. While others charge for pickles, onions, lettuce, (even ketchup at some places!), Tap gives you a fully loaded burger for truly $5.00. ANNNNNDDDDDDD you get fries too! This is a steal!

image

The only catch is that you have to purchase a beverage to partake in the deal. But true to the name, they have at least 42 different craft beers on tap. So finding a delicious adult drink to enjoy with your burger and fries is a breeze.

image

The place offers a really cool vibe. There is seating both inside and outside. Wood tables, wood paneling on the walls, and steel greys give the place a rustic chic ambiance.

Service is generally good, but not the best in town.Plus, burger night gets pretty busy so plan to enjoy a drink while waiting or participate in Open Table and reserve a spot online to save some time.

All in all Tap is a great place to enjoy any time of the week. However, it is definitely the best place to grab a burger on a Monday Night!

Let’s Talk Disney : Epcot

I suppose no Florida travel blog would be complete without the tourist haven that is Disney. Unfortunately, I am not likely to make friends with this post.

image

Disney is a great place to visit and try out once or twice. However, it is crazy expensive (hello $114.00 to get in not including tax, $14.00 for a plate of food, $11.00  for a beer) and there is so much more to Florida than just Disney, Universal, and Sea World! Great-  come experience the theme parks in Orlando. But every year? Sorry – you are just missing out.  image

Now, every once in awhile even us locals will head to Disney. Sometimes because great Aunt so and so is coming and your little butt better be there and sometimes it is just fun to get a group together there. But of course, this blog would never just discuss Disney and what it has to offer in a generic sense – so let’s talk about the Drinking Around the World Challenge of Epcot.

The premise is pretty simple. Each country offers alcoholic beverages from that specific country. Pick a beverage – consume before next country- enter next country- pick another beverage. Now this may sound easy – but there are 11 different countries. Plus, let’s be honest – you are going to get sucked into the super fun pub in England for more than one drink. Just let it happen.

Some pointers to get you through your challenge to make it all the way around the world. Avoid the shots (see picture of Sake Bombs – we failed to heed this advice). Try the Canto-Loopy in China (cantaloupe infused cocktail – odd but refreshing). Eat food (recommend funnel cake in USA, sushi in Japan, everything in Morocco- avoid Italy: there are only sit down restaurants which is beyond annoying- can’t a girl just get a slice?! Apparently no). Make sure to check that your drink is actually from the respective country or it will not count (when in Morocco don’t get the Barcelona beer- it does not count). And be sure to have a hotel or a DD on hand because you will be feeling the booze.

image

Drinking around the world offers a whole new fun experience to Epcot. We had a group of 8 which turned out to be a good number for this type of trip. And one more perk about Epcot- you can take your drinks pretty much everywhere which is really cool.

Get your Little Mermaid on in Sebastian

Sebastian provides a small town feel with lots of character. This city offers fun in the sun, good food, and colorful bars to enjoy.

image

Located right along the Indian River, there are some really beautiful sandbars and spoil islands to enjoy. There are a ton of activities (and so much room of activities) on these islands!  Feel free to relax, cook-out, snorkel, fish, collect shells, collect fresh clams, and even camp on these islands. But make sure to clean up after yourself and respect others. You may be fortunate enough to get your very own island for a bit – but that may not always be the case. So please play nice!

One of the most amazing things about these spoil islands is how close the dolphins get. We saw 3 adults and 2 babies feeding in our little cove. It is really common to see dolphins in this area and honestly it never gets old! However, please see above comment about being respectful- don’t get too close, don’t try to catch them, don’t be dumb.

image
Dolphins in the Cove

Now you will need a boat/kayak/ raft/ jet ski (etc.) to access these islands and sandbars. Lucky for those who don’t have the above, Captain Hiram’s Resort (@CaptHiramsResort) (@capthirams – Instagram) rents boats, paddle boards, kayaks, etc. so no one has to be left out!

Let’s get down to the food. Salty’s Bar & Grill (http://www.saltysbarngrill.com/) has some delicious eats. The nachos are truly some of the best! I still don’t know how they could load the toppings and still manage to keep the chips crunchy. The shrimp was very good- however, they ran out of french bread and tried to pass off a hot dog bun in its place. Not quite same-same. But service was good and it was cool.

To cap off the night, head over to the biker bar of Earl’s Hideaway. It is a cool place to relax, throw back some drinks, people watch, and listen to some live bands.

Islamorada Beer Company

Speaking of Sandbar Sundays, let’s talk about Islamorada Beer Company! This place and the beer is ah-maze-ing!

image

First, the place. Located off the main drag of U.S. 1, Islamorada Beer Company is housed in a small yellow building bursting at the seems from fun and deliciousness. Walking in the super dog friendly (yay!) building, you are greeted with a cool relaxed island vibe. There is a boat with sand tucked away in the corner, plenty of seating, and a wide variety of games to keep you busy.

Adorning the walls are pictures of various beer lovers and patrons enjoying the brews at different locations (however, most people are pictured at the sandbar – duh! (READ ABOUT AMAZING ISLAMORADA SANDBARS HERE:  https://letsgofloridatravel.com/2016/05/23/sandbar-sunday-in-islamorada/). The staff is super friendly and many of them actually brew the beer. Which means you get inside knowledge not just good service.

Now onto the brews. Overall, this place has the most collective wonderful tasting beer I have ever experienced. It is truly hard to pick a favorite. For me, my top ones are Sandbar Sunday, No Wake Zone, and Channel Marker.

This past Saturday, Islamorada Beer Company rolled out Beaches be Crazy which was not only great fun but good drinking. The beer was delicious and the company offered live music, free pizza, and giveaways too!

image

So go check out Islamorada Beer Company where you can truly feel like a local. Or if you can’t make it to Islamorada- check out your local stores to pick up some great brews.

Oh and word on the street is that IBC may be opening up a location in the Treasure Coast – so keep your eyes open for that! Fingers crossed!!!

Be sure to follow me on Instagram @lets_go_florida and check out Islamorada Beer Company at http://www.islamoradabeerco.com/beers.html and on Instagram @islamoradabeer

Sandbar Sunday in Islamorada

Sunday. The dreaded day that consumes you with simultaneous fear and loathing that Monday is fast approaching and it is back to the daily grind. So what’s the best cure for those Sunday blues? Sunday funday at the sandbar.

image

Islamorada offers amazing fishing, snorkeling, and diving. But it offers another delightful water based activity that requires only minimal amounts of effort: relaxing at the sandbar.

The sandbar right off of Whale Harbor is a beautiful location and a true sandbar during low tide. The water is crystal clear, the sand is beautiful, and there are some cute little sea creatures floating about.

image

The sandbar off of Whale Harbor  is one of the more interesting sandbars. Many others have a “thing”. Like this is a “family” sandbar or this is a “party” sandbar- Holiday Isle is a weird mix. There are young Miami kids with overpacked boats and booty shaking youngsters only there to have a good time, families with the little ones running around the sand trying to fight the current with their floaties, and the die hard fishing crowd that pulls up after a morning of angling. So in reality you have your pick of the day you would like to experience. As such, I would recommend taking a lap around before committing to a spot to try to find your ideal sandbar-mates.

image

The terrain, like the crowd, also changes pretty quickly. There are areas of beautiful hard white sand with the perfect level of water to sit comfortably and relax and then there are deep water areas with squishy sand that feels rather odd under your toes.

image

Overall, definitely a place to see and enjoy.  Oh did I mention we may have met Kenny Chesney? Not like any of us had the guts to actually ask him. But whoever he was- he was pretty nice.

The End of an Era – Cafe de Paris

For more than 50 years the charming restaurant has stood as a staple on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.  The owner cautiously watching and kindly mingling with the customers. His wife quickly zipping around making sure everyone has a seat and is happy with the experience. However, everything comes to an end and it is time for Cafe de Paris.

image

The restaurant was one that transported you from the moment you walked in. From the authentic french cuisine, to the serenade of the live pianist, to the red, white, and blue,  awnings adorning the restaurant walls, you felt as if you were in another world.

image

It is very sad to see this place close. However, for the owners, it was time to retire. It will be interesting to see what will take the place of this piece of Las Olas culture. Hopefully, the company who now controls the fate will recognize the loyal clientele and need for uniqueness on the boulevard. But- time will tell.

Something a Little Different

I am obviously someone who loves my home state of Florida. But even I sometimes get the urge to explore. So that is what I did!

image

The great thing about living in Florida is that there are a lot of major airports and some really great deals on flights. For this trip, we scored Allegiant flights for $45.00 (yep – you read that right) to Chattanooga, TN. And boy it was a hoot!

Our trip started with a Friday evening flight out of the Clearwater Airport. Now let me be very honest about Allegiant. The flights are cheap and they get you where you want to go. That is about all. They ask you to pay for carry on bags, checked bags, printing tickets, any food or drinks on the plane, picking seats, etc. So your best bet is to use these flights like we do. Pack light, get the app, download tickets for free, and just go with the flow on your seats. If you travel this way, then you absolutely cannot beat the prices.

So our weekend away in Chattanooga was jam packed. Saturday we visited Urban Stack for some solid whiskey and killer burgers. Then off to a white water rafting trip with High Country Adventures. Which, to say the least, was memorable.

The first half of the trip was a normal outing. However,  someone dislocated a shoulder and everything changed. Our boat went ahead without the group. So here we are heading down the Ocoee River – alone. Well the wind starts to pick up. Then it starts to rain. Then there is thunder. Yep – now some lightning. Nope not done yet- it starts hailing. Not like a few drops of hail- but white out…can’t open your eyes..we are going to die hail. So at this point our amazing guide keeps us moving forward and out of the storm. Luckily, we lived and have one heck of a story. (Although hearing him scream if anything happens swim right was not the most comforting feeling in the world).

Sunday, we decided to calm things down and visit rock city. Of all the tourist attractions in the area, this is the one to see. The water falls, caverns, cliffs, and views are pretty amazing. That evening we checked out some cool craft beer spots like The Terminal and Heaven and Ale.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Monday was our last day in town. Since we had a late night flight, we had some time to kill. So naturally, it was time for a Segway tour. OK. I know. They are dorky. BUT they are also pretty darn fun. Especially in a hilly city like Chattanooga. I would totally recommend that everyone lose a bit a dignity and hop on that Segway !

All in all you really can’t beat jetting out of town just to explore every once in while. But, my heart and my favorite state will always be Florida.

Boca Bash 2016!

Welcome to one of the biggest sandbar parties around. Boca Bash is a Facebook invitation party that gathers a wide variety of people to Lake Boca on the Intercoastal Waterway on a specific date each year.

image

Lake Boca is not what many of you would think of as a “lake”. It is a wide section of water on the ICW next to the Boca Inlet. In this wide section of water there is a very shallow area. During low tide the water comes up to about your knees.

So the way it works is this. Go on Facebook. Look up Boca Bash. Find the date. Mark on your calendar. Get yourself a boat or a friend with a boat. Head to Lake Boca. Have a great time. Watch the crazies. Go home.

image

Now where you anchor at Boca Bash is really going to influence the experience you have. The younger and wilder crowd will get the best spots in the middle of the lowest part. The perks – you can actually stand. The down fall is that the area is packed and honestly I cannnot even fathom what bodily fluids are in the water by 2pm. This area is filled with bikini clad wasted girls, testosterone-driven meatheads, and just recklessness.

The older crowds will typically hug the outside. The downfalls- you probably aren’t going to be able to touch the ground all day and the current rips through the area. The positives- you can still enjoy Boca Bash without some guy trying to cop a feel or some bro picking a fight with your male friends. Make sure if you are in this area to bring some floats and rope so you can hang out in the water.

image

Now the most important tip for Boca Bash. Please please please bring an experienced boater or hire a captain. This is not the place the learn how to drive a boat. There are a ton of people in the water and lots of boats moving. Plus add alcohol. It can be a very dangerous experience of you don’t have someone who knows what they are doing.

Finally, there are going to be idiots no matter where you anchor for this thing. We had a whole group tie up with 6 boats who started drifting into us because they thought one undersized anchor would hold everything. Keep your cool and maybe try to help these people. And if they are dicks – just calmly move a few feet away from them.

image

Overall, Boca Bash is a great time and probably one of the best people watching experiences around. So be sure to mark your calendars and enjoy the adventure!!!!

Tortuga Music Festival

It’s gonna be a long weekend. Tortuga is a country music festival which raises awareness and money for Rock the Ocean – a conservation program saving our beautiful waters. Tortuga is also a sun filled party weekend filled with nonstop country music.

image

So let’s talk about the good. UMMMMM- sunshine, beaches, ocean, country music, and cold beer. You really can’t beat that.

Tortuga is set up right on Fort Lauderdale beach. There are three stages and the acts literally play almost back to back all day long. A good number of people attend and everyone is pretty friendly. Tortuga is unique in that you can literally bring a beach chair, hang in your bikini, and watch some of your favorites artists perform 20 feet away from the ocean.

image

And we aren’t talking rinky-dink country artists. This year hosted Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Thomas Rhett, and the ever delicious Sam Hunt to name only a few.

Now for the negatives: tickets are super expensive (general admission at about $115.00 per day) BUT if you think about the amount the artists you see in a day it is kinda worth it. Also, the sun can get super hot- so you have to be sure to drink water – and no the water content in your beer will not suffice. Finally, although people are nice it can be busy. So expect crowds and just chill if you have to wait a few minutes for another refreshment.

image

Now, lets talk about some of the cool things to do if you can’t afford the concert. Well for one if you have a boat be cheap and view offshore! Although you are not going to get great views, you can still hear the music and hang out in the sun. Check out some of the beach bars – Blondies was amazingly packed and super fun with the Tortuga crowd in town. Lastly, people watch. Duh- there are a ton of colorful characters wondering about so grab a beach chair, hang out the outskirts, and enjoy!

The Breakers Hotel

Elegant, Gorgeous, Amazing. Those are the three words that instantly come to mind when I think of The Breakers in Palm Beach. This place is not simply a hotel – it is the epitome of a luxury experience.

image

Turning right into the hotel entrance, you will enjoy perfectly manicured palm trees lining the stretch of road leading to castle-like building. After valeting your vehicle, you are transported into another world.

image

Beautiful floral arrangements greet you as you step in the door. Meticulous paintings adorn the ceilings. Glamourous chandeliers cast a soft elegant glow. Intricate word work is displayed in every door frame. This place is simply magnificent.

image

The service is wonderful and the views are absolutely breathtaking. You are right there on the ocean.

image

Now all this class and beauty does come at a pretty penny. However, it is worth it. I would recommend saving your penny’s to experience even one night in this place because it is something to be seen.
