Balearia Bahamas Day Cruise

As long as it is understood that the ship is a ferry and not a cruise, you will have a great time!

image

The ship offers drinks and food for purchase on the way over to and back from the Bahamas. There is plenty of room to sit and even a small pool on the top deck. The staff is friendly enough, but don’t expect the over-the-top service often provided on a cruise ship. (I mean the trip generally only costs 80 bucks there and back).

The trip takes about 4 hours each way. On the way over, the staff will attempt to sell bus and travel tickets. However, for those looking for a little more excitement than a touristy straw market or another resort, there are a ton of taxis waiting at the port.

We met our wonderful driver, Woody, who took us to Cleveland’s Beach Club. We enjoyed fresh conch, played dominos, drank Sands, and frolicked on the beach.

The major complaint for the whole trip was the disembarking off the ship- it was really disorganized and chaotic.

All in all, you can’t beat 80 bucks for a trip to the Bahamas! Just remember when traveling to always be safe and smart!

Redneck Yacht Club Mudpark

This event is definitely not for the faint of heart. Located in Punta Gorda, Florida, Redneck Yacht Club Mudpark offers three day mudding events throughout the year. The park offers primitive camping, food vendors, porta potties, and a truck to shower for a fee.

image

RYC offers many atv and side-by-side trails, airboat races, truck pulls, atv races, a giant mudhole, and many other featured events. Plus, there is some of the best people watching you will find!

image

However, word of caution. This event can get rowdy. There is a significant amount of people who come just to party. RYC makes it totally possible to have a tamer experience, but it will not always be 100% kid friendly. They offer a family camping area which has noise restrictions and is away from the heavy partying areas. Also, avoid the concert and “the loop” at night. This is where a lot of the heavy partying occurs. (AKA there is a lot of drinking and  Mardi Gras  like activities that happen).

Also, with events like these there are idiots. But most people are very friendly and there to ride the trails, see big trucks,  and get muddy!

Lobster Mini Season

Get ready for a crazy adventure! Lobster mini season rivals any national holiday in South Florida. Some people spend all year preparing for these two days. The seriously dedicated have their secret spots and best divers ready for the midnight start.

image

For the beginners, mini season may not be the best time to learn. There is a lot of boat traffic and “hot spots” get cleared out pretty quickly. Don’t fret though, regular season is right around the corner and may be a better time to learn the basic skills.

image

Remember, law enforcement is out in full force so please make sure to know limits and size requirements. Also, be sure to check locations to make sure that you are not in a protected area. (If you are killing it and there are no other boats around, it may be wise to double check your chart to make sure you are not in protected waters).

For travelers that have no or little boating or lobstering experience, consider hiring a captain to take you out. We have a lot of very experienced captains who can show you the ropes and make sure everyone has a safe time!
